"All four major candidates are in line with the system"

Officials think a high turnout in the June 12 presidential election would validate the nation's unique form of government.

By Borzou Daragahi and Ramin Mostaghim
May 28, 2009
Reporting from Tehran and Beirut -- Putting their political rivalries aside, hundreds of Iranian television executives and government officials gathered recently to think up strategies to draw as many voters as possible to their country's June 12 presidential election.

"All four major candidates are in line with the system," Askar Owladi, a high-ranking member of the conservative Islamic Coalition Party, told attendees.

"So we do not feel concerned about who will be our next president," Owladi said. "We should make sure we can maximize the turnout because that high turnout can ensure and secure the future of our system."

Officials announced last week that the powerful Guardian Council approved incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and three other candidates to run in an election that hinges on domestic economic issues but could weigh heavily on the course of several Middle East standoffs.

Though Ahmadinejad, as president, has considerably less power than Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country's highest political and spiritual authority, a continued Ahmadinejad presidency, for one thing, would make it tougher for the West to make a deal with Iran over its nuclear program.

Still, for many in the ruling establishment of the Islamic Republic, who wins the presidency is almost less important than how many people vote. In other countries, political operatives and candidates knock on doors, organize carpools and enlist volunteers to encourage voters to cast ballots. In Iran, the government itself rallies voters to the polls.

Khamenei has long placed huge stock on voter participation as a validation of the Islamic Republic's popularity, describing any vote for a candidate as a symbol of national honor and a show of support for Iran's unique political system, which combines elements of a democracy with clerical rule.

Election day "is one of the Iranian nation's big tests before the eyes of the enemies," Khamenei said in a speech this month in western Iran, apparently referring to the West and Israel. "Their aim is to [do something] so that elections are held with little enthusiasm and poor turnout. They want the people of Iran not to have an active participation in the elections."

Central government officials play a heavy role in overseeing elections, monitoring for fraud and counting ballots.

More than 400 candidates applied at the Interior Ministry to run for president. The Guardian Council, a governmental board composed of clerics and jurists that vets all candidates and laws for adherence to the Islamic system, said that only Ahmadinejad, former Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi, former parliamentary speaker Mehdi Karroubi and former Revolutionary Guard commander Mohsen Rezai would be allowed to run.

Iran's state-run broadcaster has agreed to organize six televised debates among the candidates to drum up interest in the election.

The hard-line Basiji militia, which many credit for having secured the presidency for Ahmadinejad in 2005, has been barred from electioneering. Karroubi and others have called for the creation of independent panels to monitor the vote after allegations in 2005 of ballot shenanigans that favored Ahmadinejad. But judiciary officials have rejected the possibility of establishing a role for international or independent observers.

Officials are promising a free and fair election. This time, they're equipped with a computer vote-counting system meant to prevent cheating.

Opposition figures and foreign TV outlets that serve the Iranian diaspora often call on Iranians to boycott elections as a show of protest. But many analysts think high turnout will benefit moderate candidates like Mousavi and Karroubi.

Ahmadinejad's conservative, rural supporters are expected to dutifully show up at the polls, but educated urbanites may stay home.

Only 34% of Tehran residents voted when conservatives triumphed in 2004 parliamentary elections amid low overall turnout.

In contrast, turnout peaked in 1997 and 2001 in presidential elections that pitted reformist candidate Mohammad Khatami, who preceded Ahmadinejad as president, against hard-liners, and Khatami won both times. His elevation riled conservatives and began eight years of divided government and fierce political infighting.

But either memories of that period have faded or hard-liners are convinced that no one of Khatami's stature or political beliefs has a shot at being elected. Leaders say that just casting a ballot affirms Iranians' support for the country's system of government.

"I am telling you, dear people of Iran, contrary to what the enemies wish, we all need to participate in the elections actively," Khamenei said last week.

"The first priority is not to choose either this individual or that. The first priority is your presence in the elections. Your presence strengthens the state."

Iran's political system

Iran's political system
May 28, 2009

The winner of Iran's June 12 presidential election will enjoy only limited power in the nation's complex system.

How does the Islamic Republic's political system work?

It combines elements of democracy with unelected religious leadership. The elected president is technically subordinate to the appointed supreme leader. Similarly, the elected parliament is shadowed by the Guardian Council, a panel of 12 unelected clerics and Islamic jurists who have the power to reject legislation deemed un-Islamic and veto presidential and parliamentary candidates.

How powerful is the president?

In theory, the president's powers are second only to the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In practice, his freedom of action can be curtailed by various unelected bodies mostly controlled by clerics. These bodies, including the Guardian Council, have generally backed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad since he was elected in 2005, but thwarted his reformist predecessor Mohammad Khatami.

What does the president do?

The president is responsible for economic policy and, along with his Cabinet, daily management of national and foreign affairs; heads the Supreme National Security Council, which coordinates defense and security policy; and can sign agreements with foreign governments and approve ambassadorial appointments. On major issues he defers to the supreme leader.

What does the supreme leader do?

The supreme leader, appointed by an assembly of senior clerics, has the final say in vital matters such as nuclear policy and foreign relations. He sets the outlines of domestic and foreign policy, and controls the armed forces and intelligence agencies. He appoints the heads of the judiciary and the state broadcasting company and other key posts.

* * *
* * *
* * *

Election farce: Why Khamenei supports Ahamadinejad

Ahmadinejad Kissing hand of Khamenei

Those following developments in Iran may ask themselves why the Iranian regime’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, supports his current president, Mahmoud Ahamadinejad, to such an extent.

Khamenei is surely aware of the fact that Ahmadinejad has by now become the most hated figure in the contemporary world. But, he has left no doubt that Ahmadinejad is Khamenei’s favored candidate for the June 12th presidential elections.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was born in 1956 in the small town of Garmsar (Central province). Khamenei took note of him in 2003 and 2004, when in addition to being the mayor of Tehran, he was one of the members of a council coordinating the extremist factions loyal to the regime. At the time, this secret council was in practice more powerful than the government when it came to adopting some of the sensitive decisions. Khamenei retained their counsel in regards to the methods of dealing with the nuclear crisis. To his delight, the Supreme Leader soon realized that Ahmadinejad is fully decisive in pursuing fundamentalist policies. Khamenei ordered the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to dip into his own budget and build a large highway in Tehran, crediting Ahmadinejad for its completion, thereby touting him as a powerful mayor and political figure.

During this period, as Tehran’s mayor, Ahmadinejad resorted to some highly contentious activities:

– Building a memorial for a fundamentalist suicide bomber responsible for the attack against the base of American soldiers in Beirut, and killing of 241 US marines and 58 French paratroopers.
– Building a memorial for Khaled Islamboli, who assassinated former Egyptian president Anwar Sadat.

Before becoming mayor, Ahmadinejad had made many accomplishments for the regime’s policy of fundamentalism. His most “luminous” accomplishment was in early 1980s, when he tortured imprisoned university students as a close associate of Assadollah Lajevardi, one of the most ruthless torturers in the world.

In subsequent years, when the war with neighboring Iraq intensified, Ahmadinejad became a skilled member of the IRGC. However, he did not fight in the war front. Instead, he was among the commanders of “extraterritorial operations,” a less disgraceful pseudonym for acts of terrorism abroad.

During this period, his parallel activities branched into external operations and domestic crimes. On the one hand, he conducted operations in various foreign cities such as Vienna, Paris, Istanbul, and also along the Iran-Iraq border, including the assassination of Abdolrahman Ghassemlou, Secretary General of the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran, in the Austrian capital. On the other hand, while in Tehran, he committed crimes such as the assassination of Dr. Sami, the first post-revolution Health Minister.

Ahmadinejad has always been at the forefront of the regime’s extremism and terrorism. In the 1990s, he was among the main leaders of plain-clothed suppressive agents and the fundamentalist “Ansar-e Hezbollah” group, which are part of the regime’s unofficial suppressive organs. Among their tasks is to attack student dormitories, organize violent counter-protests against peaceful student and workers’ demonstrations.

“Ansar-e Hezbollah” was Ahmadinejad’s stepping stone to reach the governorship of Lorestan and Ardebil provinces, eventually becoming the mayor of Tehran. Regardless of his official posts, Ahmadinejad retains his strong contacts with the group. His regular Thursday night speeches truly captivate his “Ansar” brothers.

Nonetheless, in the course of the July 2005 presidential race, no one inside or outside of the Iranian regime anticipated Ahmadinejad’s presidency. It was Khamenei who guaranteed Ahmadinejad’s victory with the help of the IRGC. The operation was codenamed “Quiet Light,” referring to unknown wartime operations which remain a secret until the last second.

Ahmadinejad’s presidency was not limited to a power grab by one extremist individual. It reflected a fundamental change in the ruling regime:

– Interrogators, torturers, commanders of terrorist units, and leaders of suppressive factions occupied sensitive government posts.
– The IRGC consolidated itself within the fabric of the regime and the clerical regime was thus militarized.
– The regime’s basis narrowed enormously and the majority of factions were purged.
– With regards to foreign policy, the mullahs adopted an aggressive posture. In reality, this was a declaration of war with the Iranian people and the international community.

In his first week in office as president, Ahmadinejad ended the suspension of uranium enrichment. Six days after getting into the presidential palace, he ordered the breaking of locks at the Natanz facility. Then, he accelerated the regime’s activities to build a nuclear weapon.

Right at the outset, he said, “Human rights is a despicable and tacky debate.” During his tenure, hangings increased four-fold, and at least 150 political prisoners were executed.

In terms of foreign policy, Ahmadinejad repeatedly called for the destruction of Israel and denied the Holocaust, which is an acknowledged historical occurrence. He is also famous for declaring the readiness of his regime to “fill the power vacuum left by the US in Iraq.”

He also called for the change in leadership of global affairs and “removal of corrupt powers.”

Today, Ahmadinejad has again announced his candidacy for the mullahs’ presidency. If he retains his post, it would suggest that for Khamenei, extremism, warmongering, and the nuclear weapon, are vital to such an extent that they far outweigh the global hatred towards Ahmadinejad.

Protests in brief Wednesday, 27 May 2009

Protests in brief
Wednesday, 27 May 2009

Student protest in Iran:

Yasuj (southwestern Iran): More than 800 students from the University of Yasuj staged a sit-in at the university in protest to the Iranian regime’s policy of suppression and terror. The act of protest, which began on May 20, lasted until Thursday night, with many students remaining on the campus. The students carried placards, reading, “Students die, but will not surrender.

Tabriz (northwestern Iran): On Sunday, the people of Tabriz staged a gathering in Shahgoli Park, chanting “Death to Khatami,” referring to the mullahs’ former president. They were expressing outrage over the use of an ethnic slur by Khatami insulting Azeri Iranians. The protestors clashed with the regime’s suppressive State Security Force (SSF). A number of them were arrested, according to obtained reports.

Zanjan province (northwestern Iran): Students at the University of Zanjan carried out a protest gathering on Monday, May 25. Some of the placards students carried said, “Every Iranian calls for freedom,” and “Shame on Khatami.”

Arak (central Iran): Students at the University of Arak, disrupted a speech by Zaidabadi, a member of the regime faction tied to former mullahs’ president, Mohammad Khatami. The students carried placards calling for the release of detained student activists. They protested that none of the regime’s factions are true to their words. The regime’s candidates, they said, go as far as supporting women’s rights conventions and calling for the release of detained students, but as soon as getting into power, they forget about their hollow pledges.

410 acts of protest in Iranian month of Ordibehesht (April 21 ? May 22)

410 acts of protest in Iranian month of Ordibehesht (April 21 ? May 22)

Tuesday, 26 May 2009

Students at the University of Zanjan (northwest Iran) on May 20 disrupted a speech by Mirhossein Moussavi, former mullahs' prime minister, and demanded explanations about his role during the 1988 massacre of political prisoners.

Iranians carried out more than 410 acts of protest in the past month of the Iranian calendar (April 21 – May 22), expressing their deep-seated disdain toward the religious fascism ruling Iran, its suppressive policies, and catastrophic living conditions of workers and teachers....

During the same period, university students in Iran carried out 114 strikes, gatherings, and sit-ins, turning the country’s campuses into the main centers of protest against the clerical regime. Student protests were animated with chants such as, “Death to dictator, Death to fascists,” “Either death or freedom,” “Guns, bullets, Bassij: No longer effective,” in reference to the regime’s paramilitary Bassij Force.

University students in Tehran, Tabriz, Isfahan, Shiraz, Zanjan, Ghazvin, Mashhad, Babolsar, Arak, Karaj, Sistan va Balouchestan, and Kermanshah, expressed outrage over the mullahs’ sham presidential elections, transforming the mullahs’ presidential campaign sessions into gatherings which denounced and deplored the entire clerical regime.

Mirhossein Moussavi, former mullahs’ prime minister during the war with Iraq and one of the main accomplices in exporting terror abroad and execution of political prisoners, including the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in the summer of 1988, was questioned and bashed by students for his role in the massacre.

Students also chided Mahmoud Ahamadinejad, describing him in their chants as the “source of corruption and discrimination,” in Iran.

Workers carried out more than 90 strikes in Iranian month of Ordibehesht. In numerous sit-ins and gatherings, workers demanded their delayed wages, which have been squandered by the mullahs.

On May 1, 2009, on the occasion of the International Workers’ Day, thousands of workers in Iran marched against the ruling clerics in many cities including Tehran, Kermanshah, Qom, Arak, Sanandaj, and Ghasre Shirin, despite the heavy presence of suppressive forces and the institution of an undeclared martial law.

The regime’s suppressive State Security Force (SSF) attacked protestors’ rally at Tehran’s Laleh Park, arresting more than 150 labor activists, women, and youth. Despite the passing of nearly a month since the arrests, some of the detainees are still imprisoned on an arbitrary basis.

During the past month of Iranian calendar, teachers organized more than 100 acts of protest. Nationwide teachers’ strikes in early May led to closure of schools across the country. The strikes took place as the clerical regime marshaled its security and intelligence forces in a bid to prevent the protests.

Additionally, the number of protests by other social sectors against the ruling religious fascism in Iran reached to a hundred. Some of the other acts of protest included those of opponents imprisoned in the regime’s medieval prisons, as well as writing anti-government graffiti on walls across towns.

During the last month of Iranian calendar (April 21 – May 22) the clerical regime has intensified the reign of terror in the country. In a bid to quell social uprisings, it hanged 47 prisoners and issued death sentences for 27 others. Thousands were arrested in Tehran and other cities on various pretexts.

Jailed activist, on hunger strike, is in critical condition!!

IRAN: Jailed activist, on hunger strike, is in critical condition!!

Behroozjavidtehrani2 After nearly 10 years, the last known prisoner from Iran's bloody 1999 student uprising, Behrooz Javid-Tehrani (pictured), is in critical condition in the so-called "doghouse" section of the Gohar Dasht prison, according to the New York-based advocacy group Human Rights Watch.

The organization issued a press release Saturday demanding Javid-Tehrani's release and accusing Iranian authorities of failing to provide adequate medical care during the prisoner's hunger strike, now in its third week.

Javid-Tehrani, 29, has not had access to a lawyer and has had limited contact with his family since his 2005 arrest, the group said, adding that a medical examination in 2006 suggested he had been physically abused in prison.

In addition to being beaten and shackled in solitary confinement, Javid-Tehrani has lost 50% of his vision due to severe head injuries, friends and family told Human Rights Watch.

Javid-Tehrani has been in and out of prison since he was arrested during the government crackdown on student demonstrations following the closure of a liberal newspaper in July 1999, sparking the bloodiest riots in Iran's recent history.

He was released in 2003 after serving four years of an eight-year sentence, but his continued activism on behalf of political prisoners and their families soon attracted the attention of judicial authorities.

In 2005, Javid-Tehrani conducted an interview with the imprisoned dissident Akbar Mohammadi shortly before the latter died under mysterious circumstances, and Javid-Tehrani was promptly re-arrested.

Although Javid-Tehrani was sentenced by the same judge who presided over Roxana Saberi's case, an expert at Human Rights Watch said that without an American passport, he is unlikely to receive the same attention or leniency.

"Looking back on his cellmate Amir Heshmat Saran, who died mysteriously in March 2009, as well as his friends Akbar Mohammadi and Valiollah Faiz Mahdavi -- two others who died mysteriously, as well as the blogger Omid Reza Mirsayafi, who died mysteriously last month, it's hard not to imagine that Behrooz's fate is coupled with theirs," the expert wrote in an e-mail to Babylon & Beyond.

In other news, human rights organizations are condemning the Iranian judiciary's decision to execute 18-year-old Mohammad Reza Haddadi of Shiraz for a crime he allegedly committed when he was 15.

The execution is expected to be carried out this week, despite reports that Haddadi's innocence was corroborated by his adult co-defendants, who both received lighter sentences.

Students protest in Iran!!

University of Tehran students protested on Sunday against the clerical regime’s suppressive policies imposed on Iranian universities. The students, who gathered at 11:30 in the morning in front of the Technical Department of the university, continued their protest for hours.

The students, who chanted “Death to dictator,” urged unity and solidarity among all university students against the clerical regime and its policies. They also expressed outrage at the regime’s sham presidential elections.

In a separate act of protest, University of Tehran students also protested against the entire regime and its factions with chants of “No Khatami, No Mahmoud,” referring to the mullahs’ former president, Mohammad Khatami, and the incumbent Mahmoud Amadinejad.

In protest to Khatami’s offensive ethnic slurs against Azeri Iranians, students chanted, “Death to Khatami,” and “Khatami, shame on you.” They also viewed Khatami’s insult as part of what they described as the regime’s systematic apartheid against ethnic minorities. Expressing support for Azeri Iranians, they chanted “Long live Azerbaijan.”

On Sunday, part time teachers in the provinces of Lorestan and Charmahal Bakhtiari gathered in front of the regime’s parliament building to demand a final determination on the status of their employment. The angry protestors chanted, “What happened to justice?”

Ex-chancellor of Tehran Univ.: Presidential contenders have participated in murder and crime ...

Ex-chancellor of Tehran Univ.: Presidential contenders have participated in murder and crime ...

Sunday, 24 May 2009

Dr. Mohammad Maleki, the first chancellor of the University of Tehran following the 1979 revolution - In an open letter about the regime’s upcoming sham presidential elections, Dr. Mohammad Maleki, the first chancellor of the University of Tehran following the revolution, wrote: The current race has a more comical and entertaining undertone. At times, one hears slogans and statements meant to prop up the notion that everything and everyone in the game have changed, with new players just coming onto the scene.”

“They have come to the fore with a high sense of self as if they had no involvement in all those killings, whether in the war front or in prisons or in other parts of the country and the world,” Dr. Maleki went on to say in reference to the regime’s atrocious crimes in Iran and acts of terrorism abroad.

The four presidential contenders for the June elections, former mullahs’ prime minister, Mirhossein Moussavi, former Revolutionary Guard Corps commander, Mohsen Rezai, former parliamentary speaker, Mehdi Karoubi, and the incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have all held some of the highest posts in the regime, and thus had a role in making the most important state decisions on domestic suppression and acts of terrorism outside Iran’s borders.

“They pretend they had not even the slightest role or responsibility during the past 30 years for creating all this poverty, prostitution, theft, and bribery, which has gripped this society. One must ask Mr. Moussavi, ‘was it not you who during 1979 to 1982 was part of the central leadership of the Islamic Republic Party, which controlled all the levers of power in the country, and joined hands with the Mojahedin of Islamic Revolution Party to do whatever you fancied?”

Moussavi has also come under increasing fire from university students across the country for his role in the massacre of more than 30,000 political prisoners in 1988, many of whom had already completed their sentences. He was the mullahs’ third-ranking official at the time.

Making explicit reference to this, Dr. Maleki added: “I heard that while at a university, in response to a question posed by one of the students about your opinion on the 1988 crimes and the massacre of thousands of people, including students, in prisons, you said: I did not intervene in the affairs of the judiciary. … Is it not true that all state security decisions were enacted under the supervision of the Supreme National Defense Council, whose 7-person membership at the time included the prime minister? How could you have not known about such high level crimes being committed? Apparently, Mr. Moussavi you believe that you are living in the city of the deaf, the blind and the dumb. You supported all those crimes, murders, and acts of torture. You agreed to them and had no quarrels with your conscience. Similarly, you will not stand in the way of such acts now or in the future.”

The former University of Tehran president addressed Moussavi again, who spent the 1990s in political hibernation, claiming that he only painted and made sculptures as an artist, and added: “Have you ever painted a picture of a white dove with bloodied wings fallen at the bottom of a cage, since you witnessed so many events during the 8 year war with Iraq, and the tortures and the murders of the 1980s, including the unparalleled massacre of thousands of prisoners in 1988? Have you painted a picture depicting the mass executions, which took place while you were still in office? Have you drawn a portrait depicting the lives of millions of people who were displaced during the war? Have you ever explained why after the liberation of Khorramshahr [in May 1982] and the pull back of Iraqi forces [from Iranian territory], you still decided to continue a war, which caused the death and maiming of hundreds of thousands of people and created billions of dollars in damages?”

Dr. Maleki concluded his letter by addressing regime officials and saying: “As an Iranian, and as someone who for 60 years has fought for freedom and equality, I declare that I will vote, but not to place someone on the seat of presidential power. I will vote in favor of placing each and every one of you and your cohorts, who have destroyed my homeland to such an extent, on the seats of a court in charge of investigating the crimes you have committed against humanity, so that you can be held accountable to the people of Iran and the world.”

Iran Blocks Facebook Ahead Of Elections!!!

Posted by Nick O'Neil

This morning I’ve been receiving numerous reports that Iran has blocked Facebook. After doing a little searching around I found an article stating that it was blocked “to prevent supporters of the leading opposition candidate from using the site for his campaign.” Mir Hossein Mousavi has attracted over 5,200 supporters on the site. While it’s far from a majority of voters, it was clearly the beginning of a movement that the Ahmadinejad regime was not a fan of.

This isn’t the first time that Iran has blocked Facebook. In 2006 the site was banned for being “illegal” but in February of this year the site was unblocked again. Facebook had become the 10th most popular site in Iran according to Radio Free Europe. Political activists in Iran have become heavily active on the site, which is exactly the concern of the current regime. Less than six months later the site is back down and while many users expect the site to return after the election, many Iranians are more than a bit frustrated.

As one commenter posted on my profile wall this morning, using proper internet linguistics, “nick :( facebook now filtered in iran :( enjoy facebook with out us :(”. As the Radio Free America article suggested back in March, “many people don’t expect the Facebook access will be permanent.” Those speculators turned out to be correct and now the site is down and any hopes of a movement within Iran, sparked by Facebook activity is hopeless for the time being.

While Facebook’s latest of service technically blocks Iran from using the site, the company has publicly stated that they have no intention of blocking Iranian users. As a Facebook spokesman stated, “We have allowed, and plan to continue to allow, users to set up accounts from those countries and communicate, as long as they are not engaging in commercial activities on the sites.”

Unfortunately for the Iranians, they have a regime in place that doesn’t support freedom of speech and would prefer to run a dictatorship. Hopefully the citizens eventually get access to Facebook granted to them.

Iran: Inside and outside campuses, protests escalate against rulers
Friday, 22 May 2009

On Wednesday, May 20, 2009 more than 1,500 students at the Open University of Karaj, western Tehran, disrupted a recording session scheduled for a special broadcast on the state-run radio and TV aimed at promoting the Iranian regime’s upcoming presidential elections.
In a daring act on Wednesday more than 1,500 students at the Open University of Karaj, western Tehran, disrupted a recording session scheduled for a special broadcast on the state-run radio and TV aimed at promoting the Iranian regime’s upcoming presidential elections.

Students turned what was supposed to be an endorsement of the sham elections into a full-fledged protest against the clerical regime as a whole, complete with anti-government chants like “Shame on this deceitful government” and “Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the source of corruption and discrimination.”

Students also demanded the release of their incarcerated colleagues while comparing the Iranian regime to the Taliban in Afghanistan. “Death to the Taliban, be it in Kabul or Tehran,” they chanted.

Specifically calling for the immediate release of their detained classmates from the Polytechnic and Tarbiat-e Moallem universities, students also sang several popular tunes in unison, including ‘Yar-e Dabestani,’ (roughly, ‘my old time school friend’) and the former national anthem, ‘Oh Iran,’ which has been shunned by the ruling clerics. Both songs have become staples of university protests against the clerical regime in recent years, symbolizing patriotism and national solidarity against tyranny.

Separately, at Tehran’s Polytechnic University, a speech by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s representative, Saeed Jalili, who is also the mullahs’ chief nuclear negotiator, was cut short after jeers and loud chants by students calling him a liar. Students also chanted slogans against members of the mullahs’ Bassij Force, a paramilitary unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) dedicated to suppressing dissent.

Outside campuses and in various parts of Tehran, graffiti writing against the clerical regime’s leaders, including the slogan ‘Death to Ahmadinejad,’ has been on the rise, according to local residents in Tehran.

Anti-government graffiti are especially noticeable on walls near the office building of the mullahs’ Interior Ministry on Fatemi St. in Tehran, as well as in eastern parts of the capital, including Tehran Pars district.

Keyvan Rafiee:

Iran: Students disrupt Moussavi's speech with chants of "death to dictator"

Zanajan - Students grill Moussavi about the 1988 massacre of political prisoners

Students at the University of Zanjan (northwest Iran) on Monday disrupted a speech by Mirhossein Moussavi, former mullahs' prime minister, and demanded explanations about his role during the 1988 massacre of political prisoners.

Moussavi who acted as the mullahs’ prime minister during that period, has announced his candidacy for the mullahs’ upcoming sham presidential elections.

"Where were you in 1988, and how many people did you kill?" some students asked Moussavi. One placard read "Khavaran's soil is still red," referring to the Khavaran cemetery, where thousands of political prisoners have been buried. The clerical regime is planning to destroy the cemetery in a bid to rid itself of the most important evidence about the 1988 massacre.

Students warned Moussavi that he will be judged by the people and history for his crimes in the 1988 massacre.

In the course of the 1988 massacre more than 30,000 political prisoners, many of whom had already finished their sentences, were sent to the gallows!!

They were executed group after group in accordance with the religious decree (fatwa) issued by Ruhollah Khomeini, the mullah regime’s founder.
