in continuation of pressures on political prisoners in Evin prison, Jafar Eghdami was transferred to ward 350 of Evin today.
HRA- The prisoners’ rights unit of HRA reports that Jafar Eghdami, a member of the HRA was transferred today to ward 350 of Evin which, in recent days, has become the main place where political prisoners are detained.
Jafar Eghdami is a human rights activist who has been sentenced to ten years in prison. Eghdami was arrested last year on his way to Khavaran Cemetery and spent 9 months in solitary confinement in ward 209 of Evin prison. He was initially handed a 5 year prison term during his first trial; he objected his sentence but the Appeals Court rejected his appeal and in a surprising move doubled his sentence to 10 years in prison.
In recent days ward 350, which is located in the basement of Evin prison, has become the place where political prisoners are detained. The ward lacks basic facilities and prisoners who want to call their families are being constantly harassed by prison guards.
The ongoing pressures resulted in protest by prisoners and a few started a political fast. Prison officials reacted to the protests by taking Bahman Amooyi to solitary confinement. Jafar Eghdami, Hamed Rouhi-Nejad, Saeed Matinpoor, Shahram Chinian, Majid Aliee and a prisoner identified only by his family name, Esfandiari, were also transferred to ward 350 today.
