Latest Reports on Prisoners (November 23rd):Salman Sima & Other Students Missing Since Their Arrests

HRA Prisoners’ Rights Unit

Mehrnoosh Etemadi Arrested

Agents from the Intelligence Ministry arrested Mehrnoosh Etemadi today, after searching her house and seizing her personal belongings. Etemadi is a women’s rights activist and a member of the 1 Million Signatures Campaign.

Etemadi’s lawyer announced that the illegal arrest which was done without warrant had been ordered by the Isfahan Prosecutor. There is no reliable information on what Etemadi has been accused of, but agents who took her away mentioned that her arrest was related to her activities in 1 Million Signatures Campaign.

Rasoul Baddaghi Moved to Ward 350 of Evin

The teacher activist and member of HRA, Rasoul Baddaghi was moved to ward 350 of Evin Prison which has become a ward dedicated to political prisoners. Baddaghi was arrested on September 2nd, 2009.

Also, yesterday several other political prisoners including an HRA member, Jafar Eghdami, were moved to ward 350.

Prior to today’s transfer, Rasoul Baddghai was being kept in ward 209 of Evin.

Kobra Zagheh-Doost Transferred to Public Ward in Evin

Kobra Zagheh-Doost was transferred to Evin’s public ward after spending 4 months in ward 209. Zagheh-Doost was arrested at the 40th day memorial service held for the post election martyrs. The transfer comes as $ 50,000 bail previously issued is still on hold. The investigative judge has reportedly told Zagheh-Doost’s father that he would only agree to release her on bail if she divorced her husband, Mostafa Eskandari.

Zagheh-Doost’s husband, Eskandari was held in solitary confinement for a long period. Reports suggest that he was moved back to solitary 2 weeks ago.

7 Kurdish Students of Tehran University Missing Since Their Arrests

Following a protest gathering held outside Tehran University/s faculty of law & Political Science on November 16th, agents from the Intelligence Ministry arrested 7 Kurdish University students. All 7 students were arrested outside Tehran University campus and there is no information on their whereabouts or charges.

The following is the list of detained students:

1-Ahmad Esmaili, student accounting at Omoor-Eghtesadi University

2-Amanj Rahimi, student Insurance management at Omoor-Eghtesadi University

3-Abdollah Arefi, Allameh University

4-Pakhshan Azaizi, student in social-work studies at Elmi-Karbordi University

5-Layla Mohammadi, student in sport at Alzahra University

6-Sarveh Visi, student in physical education at Alzahra University

7-Hazhar Yousefi, student in agricultural engineering at Elmi-Karbordi University

Trail of Mohammad Davari

The 26th branch of the revolutionary court in Tehran heard the case against Mohammad Davari the editor in chief of Saham News yesterday. Davari’s defense attorney, Mina Jafari announed the news and added: “Judge Pir-Abassi first read my client’s charges which included assembly and conspiracy against national security and engaging in propaganda against the regime. Following the indictment I and my colleague, Zhinoos Sharif presented the defense case. Davari was the last person to talk and the judge took note of his final defense”.

Jafari also said: “2 days after Davari’s arrest, the investigative judge had ordered his release on $ 200,000 bail. Despite the bail order and because my client has not been allowed to contact his family since his arrest and ask them to post bail, he remains in a cell he shares with 3 other prisoners in ward 209 of Evin”.

Shikoo Moarefi and Habibollah Lotfi may escape execution

Following letters written to and meetings with the authorities of the Islamic Republic by the Iraqi president, Jalal Talebani, as well as an unofficial meeting between him and the Head of Iran’s Judiciary, the death sentence verdicts of Shikoo Moarefi and Habibollah Lotfi have reportedly been overturned.

Earlier on, the Iraqi president had asked Iranian officials and Ayatollah Larijani in particular to revoke the death sentences of all Kurdish activists. This time, during an unofficial meeting with the head of the judiciary, Talebani brought up Latifi and Moarefi’s cases and Ayatollah Larijani agreed to overturn both death sentences.

The news has not yet been officially confirmed by Iranian judiciary.

Salman sima Missinf since his arrest

Student activist and member of the Iranian Alumi Oraganization, Salamn Sima, has not contacted his gamily since his arrested 10 days ago.

Sima was arrested on November 14th, 2009, when he was on his way home and taken to an unknown location.

Also missing are Soorna Hashemi, Mehrdad Bozorg, Alborz Zahedi, Sina Shokoohi, Farzan Ra’oofi, Hamid Ghahvehchian and several other students who have all been missing since their arrests last week.

Trial Date Set for Ziaeddin Nabavi

Court hearing for Ziaeddin Nabavi will be held on December 9th, 2009. Nabavi is a banned student and a member of the Right to Education Council.

Nabavi was arrested on June 15th, 2009 and is currently detained in ward 350 of Evin Prison.

Mousa Saket Released

Mousa Saket, the secretary of the Adavar Tahkim Vahdat Organization in Azarbayjan, was released 22 days after his arrest. Saket was held at the Tabriz security forces’ intelligence department for 20 days and was moved to Tabriz prison 2 days ago.

Saket was arrested on November 4th, 2009 in Tabriz. He was initially supposed to be released 10 days ago but officials extended his detention order for one more week at the end of the work hours. A week later, instead of releasing him, officials moved him to Tabriz prison before finally releasing him today.
