Yashar Hakkakpour sentenced to 6 months in prison and 50 lashes



Yashar Hakkak was sentence to 6 months in prison and 50 lashes by Unit 106 of the Criminal Court.

HRANA: Yashar Hakkakpour, a human rights activist from Azerbaijan was sentenced to 6 months in prison and 50 lashes by Unit 106 of Zanjan Criminal Court. Savalan Sesi reports that this human right activist is accused of spreading false rumors, libeling and insulting the official institutions of Iran by sending news abroad, and creating a poetry night in Zanjan University for Azar 21st (December 12th).

This former student activist was also arrested on January 21, 2006 by Information agents of Maragheh, and he was released after one month, paying thirty and fifty thousand dollar bails. This activist had also been trialed for anti-government activities and sentenced to 6 months in prison, by Unit 1 of Zanjan Revolution Court.

Hakkakpour believes that his civil activities for defending human rights of people of Azerbaijan and his activities as a student, such as creating a Poetry Night under permission of the Observation

Committee of Zanjan University, and producing publications such as “Ghizil Ozan” and “Zangan Sozlori”, has led to his arrest. Yashar Hakkakpour used to be a member of the Central Council of

Islamic Students of Zanjan University, managing director of Himeh, a journal created by students, editor in chief of “Ghizil Ozan” and “Zangan Sozlori”journals, and head of a non government oriented house for Children of Azerbaijan in Maragheh. He is currently abroad and he is in charge of public relations of the defense council for

political prisoners of Azerbaijan.
