Participant in Mourning Mothers Protest Arrested

Participant in Mourning Mothers Protest Arrested

Based on reports received by Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran, Ms. Raad, one of the participants in the weekly Mourning Mothers gathering in Laleh Park of Tehran was arrested and taken to Evin Prison.

Ms. Parvaneh Raad who is 45 years old and has two children, attended the weekly protests held in Laleh Park by Mourning Mothers (The mothers who have lost their children in the protests that followed June’s disputed election). She has been missing since December 26th when she left her home to attend a protest. Mourning Mothers searched for her whereabouts by visiting Revolutionary Court and Evin Prison, but they had no luck.

Ms. Raad has been an active member of the protests held by mothers who demand for those responsible for killing and imprisoning their children to be brought to justice.

According to some of the mothers, Ms. Raad describes herself as one the political prisoners of the 1980’s who experienced the pain of prison and torture with her own flesh and blood. She witnessed the execution of many political prisoners in that era and now she wants to be their voice.

The Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran condemn the widespread arrest in Tehran and other provinces, and particularly resent the arrest of Ms. Raad. HRDAI requests from the UN Human Rights High Commissioner to take effective and practical steps to end imprisonment and torture of political activists.
